Socialization

Communicating with Individuals on their level of functioning. Being able to understand where they are coming from. For example, an individual with Alzheimer’s may not be able to communicate their needs or wants to family who do not understand the disease.

Mental Stimulation

Mental Stimulation means the exercise of the brain. We will do an assessment and clock test or RCCT to see what age our clients are functioning mentally. We can then use past interests to help engage their brain. Using techniques like hand-eye coordination exercises, drawing, woodworking, gardening, painting or everyday household chores that may be completed with the assistance of our staff. For example, one gentleman loved to repair old appliances. So I would get old VCRs or radios and we could take them apart, play with it and put it back together. On another occasion, I helped a gentleman use a leaf blower to clean up fall leaves. Lastly, one gentleman had some bulbs burnt out in his house. We checked all of the other bulbs in the house, went to the store to get replacements, then replaced the bad bulbs. These types of mental stimulation can give your loved ones a sense of purpose, a feeling of being capable again and a boost of confidence they may have lost prior to our mental stimulation exercises. Plus we love to make our clients feel like they can still do things they’ve always enjoyed doing. This can improve memory, boost mood and make them feel a sense of normalcy again.
